The new year brings a fresh start and endless possibilities — but let’s be real, most resolutions fade by February. This year, let’s do things differently. Instead of chasing quick fixes, focus on setting health intentions that truly last. Here’s how Black women with chronic conditions and anyone seeking real change can turn their health goals into lifelong habits in 2026.

Why Intentions Work Better Than Resolutions
For some time now, people have been moving away from rigid resolutions and toward holistic, sustainable intentions. Intentions are more effective than resolutions because they focus on how you want to feel and live, not just what you want to achieve. This approach is especially powerful for Black women, who often juggle family, work, and health challenges while dedicating less time to their personal needs.
5 Steps to Setting Health Intentions That Last:

1) Reflect on Where You Are
Be honest with yourself and assess the current state of your physical, mental, and emotional health. What experiences worked for you last year? What didn’t?
2) Choose Intentions, Not Just Goals
Intentions are about the journey; goals are about the destination. Try for example:
“I intend to nourish my body with foods that energize me.”
“I intend to advocate for myself in every healthcare setting.”
“I intend to rest when I need it, without guilt.”
3) Break It Down Into Micro-Habits
Small, consistent actions beat big, unsustainable changes.
Swap sugary drinks for water a few times a week
Add a veggie to one meal a day
Schedule a weekly check-in with yourself

4) Track Your Progress With Grace and Kindness
Use a journal, app, or calendar to notice patterns and celebrate wins. If you miss a day or slip up, show yourself compassion and get back on track. No shame needed.
5) Connect With Community
You don’t have to do it alone. Join supportive spaces, like The SHE Community, where you can share challenges, celebrate progress, and stay accountable.
This Year, Focus on Wellness That's Personal, Preventive, and Holistic
Longevity & Prevention: Getting healthy is not always about losing weight; it's also about aging well.
Mental Fitness: Prioritizing mental health and reducing stress are just as important as physical health.
Personalized Coaching: Coaching in and out of the gym can provide essential support in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Holistic Self-Care: From nutrition to sleep to spiritual health, all aspects of your mind and body should be cared for when it comes to wellness.
